Water intake and its relationship with the water content of the diet in a healthy population
Many studies about the importance of water in human physiology have shown that the amount of water present in food and produced by metabolic pathways, is not sufficient to meet the daily requirements of this nutrient. Water intake, resulting from an individual's free will or from the thirst reflex, varies widely between individuals but, unlike other fundamental nutrients, daily water requirements are not clearly identified. This may be partly explained by the complex set of highly sensitive neurophysiological mechanisms ruling osmolarity and water balance. In order to assess the total amount of water consumed, volunteers were asked about the amount of water / infusions / teas that they consumed daily. Based on a survey of food frequency it was possible to identify the value of 2.51/ day of total water content /consumption in the diet of the population being studied. The obtained data is consistent with the related published literature, justifying a futher look into this aspect in order to know more about the importance of water in our regular diet and normal physiology.
